Went to see an exhibition of Maria Manuela (Vintilescu) in the Edsvik Konsthall in Sollentuna, north of Stockholm. Loved it!!

Maria Manuela describes her pictures as Pop Icon’s, women painted in the so-called pop art fashion. She gets her nspiration from ancient Japanese woodblock prints with motifs of Japanese women with fantastic coiffures, red mouths, kimonos and patterns. She has modernized and associated them to modern culture and modern, strong women who take command of their own destiny.

Maria Manuela has also been fascinated and inspired by haiku poetry, which her father co-translated and introduced in Sweden. These poems and their relationship to the four seasons are often found in her pictures. Her paintings are built up of many layers of thin, clear vinyl paint to achieve an almost printed output.
