Read some remarkable facts at the website of former Formula One racer Jan Lammers @ JanLammers.com . He started some years ago in Formula One with the average team of Shadow. That year was not really a succes. But reading the rest of his F-1 career, it’s funny that he has been a few times close to get a good seat in a proper (read fast) racing car but every time, something went wrong:
- 1979 Lotus / Chapman asks him to drive for Lotus (world champion in 1978), Lammers can’t wait and signs for 1980 season for ATS.
- 1981 Brabham / World Champion Nelson Piquet want Lammers to be his teammate in the second car. Due to the lach of any financial support, Mexican Rebaque gets the seat from Ecclestone.
- 1982 Renault / Championship leader Alain Prost is hurt due to an accident in Monaco, Lammers is asked to replace him at Detroit. Prost decided to race in the last minute.
- 1982 Ferrari / After the death of Gilles Villeuneuve in Belgium, Ferrari asks Lammers to replace him for the next couple of races. A few hours later, Lammers breaks his thumb in Detroit training for Theodore F1 and Tambay gets the deal.
- 1984 Toleman / Toleman team (later Benetton) asks Lammers to join Senna in the team, but due to tyre problems the deal is off.
- 1989 Tyrrell / Ken Tyrrell asks Lammmers to take the place from the leaving Alboreto (to Ferrari). Lammers choses for Jaguar and the unkown Alesi makes his debut.
1979 Shadow – 1980 ATS – 1981 ATS – 1982 TheodoreBesides Formula One misfortune, Lammers has been succesfull at the 24 houres of LeMans and many other classes, remember he won races with the Volvo 850 Estate in the BTCC in 1984.
Our current Dutch racer Jos Verstappen is going through the same misfortune… never a drive in a good car…
