Kristinehamn is situated by the shores of lake Vänern. To be precise, it is situated where the small rivers Varnan and Löt drain into the lake.

Kristinehamn is located exactly in the middle of Oslo, Stockholm and Gothenburg with 250 km to each of them.

By the shores of lake Vänern stands this 15 meter high Pablo Picasso statue since 1965. The statue was concipated from Picasso, but built and inaugurated without him visiting the construction site. Picasso never visited Kristinehamn. Its 15 meters make it the tallest Picasso Sculpture in the world.

In 2005 the photography company Hasselblad moved from central Göteborg to a newly built location on Pumpgatan in a ‘booming’ area known as Lindholmen where the major presence is Chalmers Technical University. The building exterior is quite nondescript industrial design but the interior is well designed and comfortable with attention to typical Swedish interior design and ergonomics.

The Hasselbladshuset building was honoured with the best building award in Göteborg in 2006 according to Expressen (GT).

After summer 2007 the Swedish Television, Swedish Radio and the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company moved into the former Hasselblad building at Pumpgatan.
The glass part of the building, which was used by Hasselblad as both office space and manufacturing area, houses now offices and studios. The lower part of the building, used by Hasselblad as manufacturing area and warehouse, is now used to accommodate television and radio studios.

The original design by Krook & Tjäder Architects had the building some 14 meters longer along the quay. This extra space the original design would have provided is now needed again to meet the requirements of Swedish Radio, and Stefan Tjäder is asked to stretch the building accordingly.

The building formerly known as “Hasselbladshuset” changed its name to “Kanalhuset” – both “Channel House” and “Canal House” since the Swedish television and radio moved in.

Slottskogen is Göteborg’s main park. See elks, foxes, deer and other Nordic animals in the park zoo. In the summer, there is a petting zoo with piglets and kid goats. Don’t miss feeding time for the seals and penguins. The petting zoo and pony rides are open from April to September.

Much of the park is given over to natural parkland with native trees such as linden, beech, maple and various species of oak. The Dawn Redwood and stately Serbian spruce are a few examples of the more exotic plants on display. The azaleas are not native but have become famous in Slottskogen.

Karlbergs slott or Karlberg Palace is a palace by the Karlberg Canal on the border of Stockholm in Solna. The palace, built in 1630 and the oldest in Solna municipality, today houses the Military Academy Karlberg.
Notwithstanding the palace remains a military institution, the park is accessible to the public and is open 06-22 daily.

The park, dating back to the 17th century, has suffered gradual encroachment. During the 1860s, the north-eastern corner was cut off by the railway, and a century later Essingeleden and other motorways had their shares. The exterior of the palace was however restored in the 1980s. Furthermore, in 2001 an archaeological examination of a nearby burial site, associated with one of the villages out of which Karlberg once was created, unveiled fragments of runestones — including one from an image stone and another featuring the proto-Norse Elder Futhark. Karlberg Palace is owned by the government of Sweden, and is managed by the Swedish Fortifications Agency.

Gustaf Nordbergs Vagnfabrik AB of Sweden from Stockholm, built a number of special custom Volvos using various different chassis designs. On occasion the Nordbergs body would be completely different, but in the case of this PV51, only minor changes were made. The first of which was that the roof was removed to make yet another Volvo convertible.

These custom PV51 convertibles were built in 1937, and added to the Nordbergs’ already high esteem in the coach-building industry. The cars were of exceptional quality, and Nordbergs went on to create custom open-top’s of the PV61 and PV445 as well.

Caltex (name formed by California and Texas) was an American oil company. Caltex Oil was formed as a joint venture in the 1930s as a collaboration initiated between the U.S. The Texas Company, Texaco, who also was active in Europe and needed a partner for oil deliveries to refineries there, and the American Standard Oil Company of California, Socal, who had oil resources in the Arab world.
Because of World War II, it took until 1947 before the Caltex-signs appeared in Sweden. In Sweden transferred Texaco’s operations in Caltex Oil AB, but in 1967 was transferred Caltex European operations back in Texaco in Sweden was represented by Texaco Oil.

The Caltex logo can still be found in Sweden, mainly on nostalgic motor circuits or from so-called ‘raggare’. Today there are two historic Caltex stations left in Sweden. One is in Mörarp and houses a Puch museum. The second is in Älvsbyn and is preserved with pumps and a souvenir shop.

Västervik was first mentioned in 1275. The town was then located at the current location of Gamleby. In 1433 Eric of Pomerania decided to give it a charter and move it to its current strategically important location, close to the castle of Stegeholm. In the ensuing centuries Västervik suffered attacks from hostile armies. It was more or less completely destroyed five times between 1450 and 1677. Despite this, king Gustav Vasa established a ship industry here in the 16th century, from which ships sailed to Germany and the Baltic countries, and from the 17th century they sailed to Portugal too. In the 18th century a long period of peace allowed the ship industry to expand, increasing the ship routes down to the Mediterranean Sea.

Every year since 1966 there is a folk music festival in Västervik, at the ruins of the Stegeholm castle. The city still bases much of its industry on its harbour, and on the industries that were established as a result of it in the late 19th century. Recently, however, Västervik has suffered the closure of certain factories, notably Electrolux, with associated job losses. Being a summer town popular with yachtspeople, campers, daytrippers, and returning former residents, Västervik experiences an annual revival in July. Just outside Västervik, there is the static inverter of HVDC Gotland and Fårhultsmasten, a 335 m tall guyed mast used for FM/TV-transmission, which shares with three other masts the title of Sweden’s tallest structure.

The newspaper Västerviks Tidning is still being published today and is part of Norrköpings Tidningar. Skandinaviska Kreditaktiebolaget is today part of SEB.
