Örebro Slott is a medieval castle fortification in Örebro. It was expanded during the reign of the royal family Vasa (House of Vasa) and finally rebuilt about 1900. The castle lies on an island in river Svartån. Some of the rooms are used as classrooms for pupils from Karolinska Skolan.

For over 700 years Örebro Castle has kept a watchful eye on everyone crossing the bridge on the River Svartån. The oldest part of the castle, a defence tower, was erected in the latter half of the 13th century.
This tower was added to in the 14th century to make a larger stronghold, and towards the end of the 16th century most of the impressive castle we see today was built.

Many important events in Swedish history took place here. For over two hundred years it has been the residence of the county governor, but a great deal is open to the general public, with art, music, food, exhibitions, guided tours and conferences.

Vadstena slott (or Vadstena Castle in English) is a former Royal Castle in Vadstena near the lake Vättern.

Vadstena Castle was originally built by King Gustav I in 1545 as a fortress to protect Stockholm from enemies from the south. The fortress consisted of three smaller stone buildings facing the lake, Vättern, three 31 meter wide ramparts, a courtyard, a moat and four circular cannons turrets. The original ramparts were torn down in the 19th century and the present ramparts were inaugurated in 1999. The stone buildings later formed the ground floor of the castle.

On August 22, 1552, King Gustav I married his third wife, Catherine Stenbock, in Vadstena. One of the castle banqueting halls is called The Wedding Hall, although its construction wasn’t finished in time for the wedding.
The reconstruction from fortress into a castle began in the 1550s, when prince Magnus became Duke of Östergötland. Duke Magnus had a mental illness and was the only son of Gustav I who didn’t become king of Sweden. Magnus died in 1595 and is buried in the nearby Abbey Church.
In 1620 the castle construction was completed and all the kings of the House of Vasa up till then had led the construction. Since 1620, the castle has been very well preserved, and is one of Sweden’s best examples of Renaissance architecture. Vadstena Castle was a royal palace until 1716, when the royal family lost interest in it; after which it became a storage for grain.

Since 1899, the castle has housed the Provincial Archives and today visitors can also find a Castle Museum with 16th and 17th century furniture, portraits and paintings. During summers the courtyard plays host to many concerts; both classical and pop music.

Viktor Rydbergsgatan is a street in Lorensbergs Villastad, a residential area in Göteborg. The villas and townhouses are almost all built between 1913 and 1925. All but three buildings were of stone with brick facades, and all contained large dwellings, limited by building areas to max 400 square meters. They were built mainly in the nationalromantik style but also 1920s classicism occurred. The villas are built with 2 to 3 floors and almost all have facades of red or reddish-brown bricks.

The city plan for this area was established in 1913 and was drawn by Albert Lilienberg, which was first city planner in Göteborg. His city plan was a revision of Per Hallman’s and Frederick Sundbärg proposal for the city’s southern parts.

The villas are built on an area behind Götaplatsen, between Viktor Rydbergsgatan and Näckrosdammen, where the terrain is very hilly and with level differences of up to 40 meters. By using the spirit of hand made brick, granite and heavy walls of stone created a great affinity with the land and the local surroundings. The cityplan included reguöated height of buildings, the placement on the lot and size.

The villa on the photo is Villa Janson on Viktor Rydbergsgatan 22, architects were Karl Severin Hansson & Eugen Thorburn, built in 1917.

More on these villas in this area, see Villa Beyer on Viktor Rydbergsgatan 20 or Viktor Rydbergsgatan 24.

The current Arkaden building was designed by architect Anders Tengbom Stockholm, and was inaugurated in October 1974. The first Arkaden-house, a theatrical, reddish brown brick building with towers and turrets, was the first half of the project “Göteborgs Arkader,” and was completed in October 1899. The building was designed by architect Francis Louis Enders, and was meant to be with arches joined by a counterpart on the other side of the street, the street “Arkaden” was drawn diagonally through the original building block.

The first part contained mostly business premises and a hotel with 50 rooms, a café and restaurant. The second half would be ready in 1904, but was never implemented. The owners ran out of money. They had pre-paid in the project’s start but the economy never recovered. The first tenant in the Arkaden was made firm Henr. Ahlberg, who moved in July 9, 1899.

Arkaden was originally Sweden’s only privately owned city street that mouth a previous rectangular blocks diagonally.

Foresta is a hotel and conference facility on southern Lidingö.

Foresta, originally called Villa Foresta including the building shown in the picture from 1915, was built for Wilhelmina Skogh as a private residence in the years 1908–1910 when she was CEO of the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm. The villa was built according to examples from medieval knight’s castles that she had seen on her many trips to Italy via the Rhine Valley in Germany. Architects were Ernst Stenhammar and Edvard Bernhard, the same architects who were behind the Grand Hôtel Royal in Stockholm. She named the house after her surname Skogh which means in english ‘forest’ and into Italian: foresta. The castle part is built of limestone from Gotland. The place overlooking Lilla Värtan towards Stockholm reminded her of the view from Fårö near Fårösund where she grew up. In 1922 she sold the property.

1915 – Villa Foresta

After she had left the post of CEO of the Grand Hôtel in December 1910, Skogh used Villa Foresta as a private residence until 1922, at the end also combined with a regular restaurant operation, but the income from the restaurant operation was not sufficient to cover the costs of the large property and her financial situation became precarious. She tried for a time to donate the entire property to the city of Lidingö for use in municipal activities such as a nursing home or similar in return for her to receive an annual annuity as long as she lived, but the city declined the offer citing Lidingö’s strained economy at the time. She was therefore forced to sell the entire property in order to pay off her bank loans and thereby also lost the only source of income she had had in the restaurant business at Foresta. A limited company was formed, which in 1922 took over the property including all fixtures.

In 1931, Anders Sandrew, an entrepreneur in the film industry, bought the building and ran a restaurant there for many years.

1957 – Hotel Foresta on Lidingö (photography by Sune Sundahl)

Builder Nils Nessen bought Foresta in 1954 and opened the hotel in 1957. The original castle-like villa was preserved and the hotel was divided into several buildings designed by architect Hack Kampmann. The interiors were created by the designer and head of NK’s textile chamber Astrid Sampe. Famous guests who have stayed at the hotel include The Beatles and Josephine Baker. In 1977, Brazilian soccerplayer Pele stayed at the Foresta when his team the New York Cosmos visited Stockholm. Nils Nessen ran the hotel until 1978 when he sold the property to TCO.

Over the years, Foresta has been expanded with separate hotel buildings behind the original villa and has undergone extensive renovations on several occasions, but the main building has retained its characteristic knight’s castle style and is a well-known feature of Lidingö, clearly visible from the Lidingö Bridge. The originally open terrace at the top of the castle part was glazed after 1929 when Foresta had switched to hotel operations.

In the 1990s, part of the property below Foresta towards the water was sold and cleared to build the terraced condominiums that stand there today.

2016 – Foresta Hotel

Foresta’s hotel operations were run until January 31, 2009 by Förvaltnings AB Foresta within the hotel chain Best Western Hotels. Between 1 February 2009 and Novemebr 2023, the restaurant, conference and hotel operations was ran by the hotel chain Scandic under the name Scandic Foresta. The hotel property was bought in autumn 2014 by the property company Altira AB.
At the end of 2023, it was unclear who will take over Foresta with the restaurant, conference and hotel business. Plans to create senior housing in the complex was denied by the local politicians of Lidingö.

Lidingö is an island in the inner Stockholm archipelago, northeast of Stockholm, Sweden.

Lidingö’s qualities have attracted affluent residents such as Bjorn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Faltskog of ABBA. Exclusive regions include the coastal region between Mölna and the east tip of the island, Gåshaga, (known as the “Gold Coast”), and the east tip of the northern part of the horse shoe, called Elfvik. Notwithstanding the fact that many middle-class Swedes have moved to the island, (due to rental apartment construction projects), the municipality remains the third wealthiest in Sweden after Danderyd and Täby.

The seascape at Lidingö shares similarities with that of Seattle, USA and Sydney, Australia, with clear blue skies and waterways. The landscape is one of large forests and open farm land.
The Lidingö summer is limited to the period between the end of May and August, when the air temperature seldom exceeds 25 °C. Sea water temperatures usually peak around 20 °C, in mid July, in the inner parts of the archipelago.

Close to the hotel is the Millesgården located. Millesgården is an art museum and sculpture garden. It is located on the grounds of the home of sculptor Carl Milles and his wife, artist Olga Milles, who are both buried there.

The above picture by Pål-Nils Nilsson was also used in a sales brochure for Hasselblad Cameras.

Särö is a locality situated in Kungsbacka Municipality in Halland. It is located south of Göteborg on the Särö peninsula, and is famous for its golf and tennis history. Geographically, the peninsula marks the transition from the Bohuslän archipelago in the north and the long, flat Halland coast in the south. The nature reserve Särö Västerskog is located nearby.

Originally an agricultural area, Särö became most popular during the end of the 19th century when the upper class of nearby Göteborg started to use the peninsula as a summer resort. A railway from central Göteborg was built, and the kings Oscar II and Gustav V frequented the locality summertime. Today, Särö is an affluent suburb to Göteborg and Kungsbacka. It can be reached by car or by bus.

Säröhus Conference Hotel is today located in the building above.

Langhammars Naturreservat is an area on Fårö, a small island north of Gotland. It is an area with limestone pillars, pebble beaches and dunes, together with a pine forest.

Just over a kilometer south of Langhammars is one of Gotland’s best kept agrarian environments from the Middle Ages. The area includes at least eight visible foundations, several waste piles, field embankments and stone beads. The area was first discovered in 1978 and excavations have been conducted here from 1997 to 2009. A house was in use from 1100 – to the 1400s, while others were dated to 1400 – and 1500’s. Oral information from the 1800s indicates that this may have been the village Langhammars old location, but also farm Bondans may have originated here.

Fårö is a small Baltic Sea island north of the island of Gotland. It has a population of fewer than 600 and has become a popular summer resort. The island has no banks, post offices, medical services or police. It has its own dialect, claimed to be the “oldest” language in Sweden.

The name “Fårö” (in Gutnish “Faroy”) is derived from the words “ö”, meaning island, and “får-“, which is a word associated with travel like in the Swedish word “färled” (fairway). The word Fårö probably means the island you have to travel to or the traveler’s island. Mainland Swedes might misinterpret the name Fårö to be derived from får, the Swedish word for sheep, due to the many sheep on the island. However, the Gutnish word for sheep is “lamm” (similar to the Swedish word “lamm”, meaning “lamb”).

Fårö Fyr (Fårö Lighthouse): The Fårö Lighthouse lies on the island’s northeastern point. It is 30-meters high and was built between 1846-47.

Langhammar / Rauks on Fårö:
The Langhammar peninsula and the Langhammar nature reserve on north-western Fårö feature rocky beaches with the Ice Age stone monoliths known as rauks. Langhammar was the setting for Ingmar Bergman’s film Through a Glass Darkly.

Digerhuvud: The Digerhuvud nature reserve features the Helgumannen fishing village. It is not suited for swimming due to its depth (up to 80 meters close to the shore) and strong currents. However, it is a popular diving and sport-fishing area.

Sudersand: The long, sandy Sudersand beach on north-eastern Fårö lies next to Sudersands Semesterby which rents cabins to tourists.

In 2012, Volvo revisted this location at Fårö on Gotland for their Baltic Love Affair summer 2012 campaign and have a look at the Making of … video on Youtube.com.

Hammarby Sjöstad is a part of Stockholm municipality, currently undergoing major urban redevelopment. It is located on both side of lake Hammarby sjö, bordering Nacka Municipality to the east. The area is part of the districts Södermalm and Södra Hammarbyhamnen.

Before the current redevelopment began, the area was known as Norra Hammarbyhamnen and Södra Hammarbyhamnen, a mainly industrial zone, centered around the Lumafabriken works, a piece of functionalist architecture designed by Eskil Sundahl and Arthur von Schmalensee which now houses a library and offices. The neighbouring Lugnet was a run-down light industrial area, housing an impromptu trailer park. On the north side of the lake, the Norra Hammarbyhamnen area was used as a harbour area, with a railway connecting the area.

New plans for most of the Södermalm area Norra Hammarbyhamnen in the early 1990s opened the door for a redevelopment of the entire area around the water expanse Hammarby Sjö. A general plan, featuring an extension of the Tvärbanan light rail link from Gullmarsplan through the area was presented.

Although the south and east part of Hammarby Sjöstad is located outside what is traditionally considered to be the perimeter of inner-city Stockholm, the design is intentionally urban rather than suburban, with boulevards, clearly defined and architecturally varied city blocks, and commercial spaces in the ground floor of the buildings. The location, next to the lake Hammarby Sjö and a canal, Sickla Kanal, has allowed for plenty of quays and walkways along the water.

At the place where the Volvo photo was taken, restaurant Zee is located.
