Dag Hammarskjölds Allé is a street on Østerbro in Copenhagen, which goes from Østerport Station to Lille Triangel . The street was given its current name in 1962 following the death of UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld the year before. Before 1962 this stretch was part of Østerbrogade. On this wide stretch are tree-lined trees lime trees which testify that this was the approach to Østerport, when Copenhagen was still surrounded by ramparts. The tree had been planted on the initiative of General Ernst Peymann in 1787.

Anders Kirk Johansen, heir to Lego, bought the villa in 2011, but does not live there. It was designed by Albert Oppenheim 1929.

Albert Oppenheim was a Danish architect who especially designed villas for the bourgeoisie around the First World War. His houses often bear the mark of English New Baroque, but since then he has moved towards neoclassicism. He was the brother of painter Ville Jais Nielsen.

2019 – Tuborg Bryggeri Administrationsbygning on Strandvejen in Hellerup (Google Streetview)

Tuborg Bryggeri Administrationsbygning was located on Strandvejen in Hellerup, just north of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Tuborg, as part of United Breweries, was acquired by Carlsberg in 1970. It brewery in Hellerup ceased operations in 1996.
The administration building has become redundant and was empty for a long time. After a long renovation period, PWC entered the building.

As you can see in the photo with the Volvo P1800 from 1966, the Tuborg umbrella (Tuborgparaplyen) was placed in front of the entrance.

The Tuborg umbrella has become so well known that this sign (today is simply called a Tuborg). But where does it come from and how old is it? It is not that difficult to answer for the Tuborg umbrella, or the “umbrella” as it was originally introduced by Tuborg in 1881 – as part of the advertising campaign for brewery bottled beer. It’s funny to think that precisely the battle over who should be bottling beer, the breweries or bottlers led to the Tuborg bracket.

The umbrella with the characteristic shape in red-white colors was mounted on the first 5 horse carriages on May 22, 1881. The remaining 5 carriages in the fleet park had an umbrella installed the following day. The intention was that the umbrella over the beer mugs should testify that there was good progress in the brewery and the delivery of the original bottled beers. So it was the bottles that first got the Tuborg umbrella fitted. Later it became a permanent fixture on the other horse carriages, train carriages, trucks, draft beer cocks, pins and more.

The idea was from Tuborg director Philip Heymann’s and brewmaster Hans Bekkevolds – the one who brewed the first pilsner in Denmark.

The umbrella was designed by the painter Carl Lund, and had the text Tuborg Lager on the front, the word Pilsner on both sides, and the word Beer on a red background in the four corners. The umbrella was to put the Tuborg name in the audience’s consciousness. You have to say that it succeeded.

Tuborg Pilsner horse and carriage

Incidentally, Tuborg beer ran out by horse carriage until the last time on October 9, 1952. Until sometime in 1954, equipment was still being exported by horse-drawn carriages, but then the horses were all over – except for show purposes.

Hotel 3 Falke was located on Falkoner Allé in Frederiksberg, a suburb west of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Today, at this location the Scandic Falkoner Hotel is active, earlier there was a Radissons Hotel in this building.

The Hotel 3 Falke is part of the Falkoner Center. Falkoner Centre (Danish: Falkoner Center) is a hotel and conference complex located in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen, Denmark. It mainly consists of Scandic Falkoner Hotel & Conference Centre. It has two venues which play host to both conferences such as concerts and shows.

The corner of Falkoner Allé and Howitzvej where the centre complex now stands, was previously the site of Frederiksberg’s first town hall which was built there in 1886 but torn down in 1953. The new centre was built between 1958 and 1959 to a Modernist design by Ole Hagen. It was the tallest building of Denmark from 1958 to 1960, when it was surpassed by the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel. It was the site of the last concert by Judy Garland on March 25, 1969 with opening act by singer Johnnie Ray. The Doors also played there. It was renovated in 1987 and given a new stainless steel cladding.

The hotel was previously owned by SAS but changed hands in connection with the company’s sale of its hotel activities to Radisson Blu. Since 2019, the hotel is owned by Scandic Hotel Group. Scandic is the largest Nordic hotel operator with a network of about 280 hotels with 57,000 rooms in six countries and annual sales of SEK 18 billion 2018.

Falkoner Centre contains two venues. The larger one, Falkonersalen (formerly Falkoner Teatret), with a capacity of some 2,000 people, is mainly used for conferences and single-day events such as Annual general meeting. Falkoner Teatret was a very popular venue for concerts during the 1970s and 1980s. The smaller one, Falkonerscenen, was originally a cinema but is now used for cultural activities such as concerts and theatrical performances and shows.

Scandic Falkoner is uniquely located in the traditional and attractive Frederiksberg theatre district in Copenhagen. Step outside our hotel and you’ll find yourself on lively Falkoner Allé. From here you can shop all around the neighbourhood’s pleasant streets, sit down in one of the many cafes or jump on the metro, which is just steps away from our hotel. If you’re looking for a calm moment and some fresh air, then lace up your running shoes or enjoy a relaxing walk in the area’s many green oases, such as the idyllic Frederiksberg Gardens. If you’re looking for ways to entertain the kids, Copenhagen Zoo is close by offering adventures for the whole family.

Hotel Marina is located on Vedbæk Strandvej in Vedbæk, Greater Copenhagen.

They offer great rooms at an amazing location, some with ocean view over the Oresund. Hotel Marina is the ideal choice for most travelers. Families and couples have great opportunities to enjoy nature, culture, and attractions. Business travelers will have a nice base during their stay as it is possible to host meetings and conferences and there are easy transport options to Copenhagen. At the hotel in Vedbæk, you will get free access to a fitness room, WiFi, parking, and “hyggelige” surroundings.

Vedbæk is located in the northern part of Greater Copenhagen, on the border between Copenhagen and North Zealand. Across the road from Hotel Marina is the harbour. Next to this is Vedbæk beach where a wooden pier stretches out into the ocean. 20 minutes from Hotel Marina is the amusement park and themed garden Dyrehavsbakken. Just 5 minutes from the hotel is Jægersborg Hegn and Dyrehave, which is part of the UNESCO heritage side in North Zealand, the par force hunting landscapes.

Hotel Marina’s surroundings are beautiful and full of activities. But the hotel is also located in short distance from Copenhagen. The city center can be reached with the coastal railway a few hundred meters from the hotel. There are also direct lines to Copenhagen Airport from Vedbæk station.

Hotel Marina is situated in beautiful, natural surroundings and is located in short distance to lots of exciting attractions. Among these are the UNESCO-heritage Dyrehaven and the amusement park Bakken. Also, the public transportation nearby offers easy access to sights such as Louisiana, Kronborg Castle, and everything in central Copenhagen.

Vedbæk is a wealthy suburban neighbourhood on the coast north of Copenhagen, Denmark. It belongs to Rudersdal Municipality and has merged with the town of Hørsholm to the north. The area has been inhabited for at least 7,000 years, as evidenced by the discovery of a Mesolithic cemetery of the Ertebølle culture. By the 16th century, there were a few small farms and fishermen’s houses on the site and in the 18th century, well-to-do townsfolk from Copenhagen started to build country houses in the area. After a paddle steamer began to call at Vedbæk on its journey from Copenhagen to Helsingør, there was an influx of visitors. There are a number of large country houses and a historic church. There has been a railway station for some time and there are popular sandy beaches to the north and south. Enrum Forest is open to the public and provides recreational facilities.

2019 – Kids City on Prinsessegade in Copenhagen (Google Streetview)

Kids City is a Elementary School Nursery located on Prinsessegade in Christianhavn in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Aimed at being a city for kids, the Prinsessegade Kindergarten and Youth Club Winning Proposal by COBE + NORD Architects, in collaboration with PK3 and Grontmij, will be the largest daycare center in all of Denmark. It also presents a big challenge – how to avoid creating a daycare factory when building an institution for so many users. Their design is not just one huge building, but rather a cluster of many small and varied buildings, grouped around two central streets that connect to the surrounding city structure. Like Copenhagen, it has different neighborhoods, different houses, different public spaces, squares and parks. More images and architects’ description after the break.

Copenhagen is growing! Projections show that by 2025, there will be up to 90.000 more inhabitants in Copenhagen than today. Of these 90,000 new inhabitants, 33,000 will be 18-29 years and a whopping 22.000 of these will be young people and children between 0 and 18 years! The site – a triangular plot in the Copenhagen borough of Christianshavn, wedged between the rigid urban block structure of Prinsessegade and the homegrown diversity of the Christiania Free Town – has been chosen as the frame of the good everyday life of 618 children and young people between age 0-18.

The design also has a city hall, a fire station, a restaurant, a stadium, a factory and a golden ballcage on the roof. Most buildings consist of a general city mass, based on a rational, modular construction system, while the special buildings of the city stand out both in terms of function and architecture. The Kids’ City is planned from a careful analysis of the site’s existing landscape, in order to emphasize and preserve as many of the present qualities as possible. The buildings are placed in such a way that the largest trees and most important landscape elements are preserved and incorporated into a large, green shared outside area – the heart of the Kids’ City. In addition to this, many new landscape elements, such as the city hall square and the beach, add diversity to the site’s existing qualities and allow many new outdoor activities and experiences.

The size and diversity of the Kids’ City means that everybody – children and young people as well as their parents – will feel at home. There’s room for the wild kids, the quiet kids, for the kids who like to draw and paint, the roleplayers, the ones who play in the sandbox, the ones that race down the mountain in mooncars and those who like to bake cookies in the kitchen. There’s room for the ones performing a musical in the city hall, the ones tinkering with their mopeds, the ones playing street basket in the cage and the ones kissing behind the bike shed.

In a very flexible scheme the winning entry proposes a new norm for how the future welfare system of Denmark can embark on the challenges of a growing capital. Instead of one large institutional building we propose a city for children. A city where scale and intimacy create a comfortable part of the city designed for especially for children. Sustainable solutions, materials and architectural solutions all point towards quality of space and underline the content of the new kindergarden, after school club and youth club.

Turborg harbor is located in Hellerup north of Copenhagen. The harbor used to serve the Danish Tuborg Breweries, and this collaboration has given name to the harbor.

The harbor’s history is beer brewing is still seen today, as two large beer bottles flank the sides of the harbor. Take a stroll along the harborside to see the landmark for yourself.

The harbor is owned by the Carlsberg brewery and administrated by Royal Danish Yacht Club.

Tuborg is a Danish brewing company founded in 1873 on a harbour in Hellerup, an area North of Copenhagen, Denmark. Since 1970 it has been part of the Carlsberg Group. The brewery’s flagship, Tuborg, pilsner was brewed for the first time in 1880.

The name Tuborg comes from Thuesborg (“Thue’s castle”), a Copenhagen inn from the 1690s situated in the area of the brewery. This evolved and was adopted into local place names, such as Lille Tuborg and Store Tuborg. “Tuborgvej” street in Copenhagen is named after the site of the original Tuborg brewery.

Tuborg initially produced pale lager for the Danish market. It merged with United Breweries in 1894, which then entered into a profit-sharing agreement with Carlsberg in 1903. In 1970, United Breweries was acquired by Carlsberg.

Today, it makes lager for global export, as well as a variety of continental styles for both domestic and foreign markets.

In 1996 the last Tuborg beer was brewed in Hellerup and the area is now providing fashionable apartments, houses and business offices.

Hellerup is a district of Gentofte Municipality in the suburbs of Copenhagen, Denmark. The most urban part of the district is centred on Strandvejen and is bordered by Østerbro to the south and the Øresund to the east. It comprises Tuborg Havn, the redeveloped brewery site of Tuborg Breweries, with the Waterfront Shopping Center, a marina and the headquarters of several large companies. Other parts of the district consist of single family detached homes. Local landmarks include the science centre Experimentarium and the art Øregaard Museum.

2023 – Kalvebod Bølge and Kalvebod Brygge in Copenhagen Denmark (Google Streetview)

Kalvebod Bølge is located on Kalvebod Brygge in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Kalvebod Brygge (literally “Kalvebod Quay”) is a waterfront area in the Vesterbro district of Copenhagen, Denmark. The name also refers to a section of the Ring 2 ring road which follows the waterfront from Langebro in the north to the H. C. Ørsted Power Station in the south. The area is dominated by office buildings, Tivoli Conference Center, several hotels and the shopping centre Fisketorvet.

The southern part of the area, south of Bernstoffsgade, is to the west bounded by an extensive railway terrain, a section of which is now under redevelopment into a linear park with scattered buildings and a super bikeway, which will ultimately provide a greenway between the city centre and the South Harbour.

The northern part of the road, northeast of Bernstoffsgade, belongs to the Indre By district. It is bounded to the north by the small Rysensteen Quarter where the Copenhagen Police Headquarters is located.

Kalvebod Brygge is situated opposite the popular Copenhagen summer hang out, Islands Brygge. Kalvebod Brygge has the potential to be Islands Brygge’s more urban counterpart but has, until now, been synonymous with a desolated office address devoid of life and public activities.

This new waterfront is a place for a larger spectrum of public activities. With a close connection to the central train station and Tivoli, Copenhagen’s famous city amusement park, ‘Kalvebod Bølge’ or the ‘Kalvebod Waves’ has become a hub, buzzing with activity and providing a chance for the inner city to regain its connection to the harbor. Constituted more by its functionality than its tradition, this inner city site is less fragile than others and manifests Copenhagen’s contemporary urban waterfront with neighboring entities such as the Black Diamond Library and the Nykredit building.

According to the schedule the complex should be finished mid 2010. The project consists of two main plazas, which extend across the water and are positioned with regards to sunlight and wind conditions. To the south, the pier allows for a flexible public space on the water with facilities to host events related to the creative industry. During the last 10 years Copenhagen has developed into a stronghold for the creative class, therefore Kalvebod Brygge proposes an urban showcase that gives organizations, companies, festivals and fairs a location along the waterfront.

In connection with this space, an active water enclave is created, for various water related activities. The plaza and surrounding pontoons provide the necessary facilities for these activities to function. The flow of boats that commute to and from the water hub also creates an active maritime background and secures the connectivity of the plaza to the rest of the city.

2019 – The Silo on Helsinkigade in Copenhagen (Google Streetview)

The Silo is located on Helsinkigade in Copenhagen.

The Silo is part of the transformation of Copenhagen’s Nordhavn (North Harbour) – a vast post-industrial development, currently being transformed into a new city district. Designed by Danish architects COBE with clients Klaus Kastbjerg and NRE Denmark, a 17-storey former grain silo and the largest industrial building in the area has been transformed into “The Silo”, housing residential apartments and public functions.

In order to bring The Silo’s industrial concrete facade up to current standards, the exterior of the existing silo has been reclad, while the interior has been preserved as raw and untouched as possible. An angular faceted exterior facade made of galvanized steel has been installed to serve as a limate shield. This has allowed the building’s characteristic slender tall shape to be maintained.

Dan Stubbergaard, Founder and Creative Director of COBE, says: “We wanted to retain the spirit of The Silo as much as possible – both in terms of its monolithic exterior and majestic concrete interior, by simply draping it with a new overcoat. The aim was to transform it from the inside out in such a way that its new inhabitants and the surrounding urban life would highlight the structure’s identity and heritage. Hence, the use of galvanized steel for the facade, which patinates in a raw way and retains the original harbour character and material feel, lending a roughness and raw beauty to the area, as in its industrial past.”

The spatial variation within the original silo is immense due to the various functions of storing and handling grain, creating space for 38 unique apartments. Single and multi-level apartments range from 106 m2 to 401 m2 in size, with floor heights of up to 7 meters. All apartments have panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies, and several have been preserved in raw concrete. The window frames are hidden on the outside of the existing concrete walls, offering expansive views of the city skyline and the Oresund coast.

Both the top and lower levels have public access. The top floor consists of a mirrored glass box housing a public restaurant with a 360-degree view of the city and the sea. The glass facade mirrors the surroundings in the daytime, and at night it is reminiscent of a lantern. The ground floor is designed as a flexible event space.

Dan Stubbergaard says: “Private housing and public functions ensure that the building remains active all day. The public functions at the top and bottom also ensure a multidimensional experience for the various users of the building. From the top you can see almost all of Copenhagen in one panoramic view. It is completely unique, and something all Copenhageners will have the chance to experience. The Silo will be inhabited, but will also be a destination. An urban focal point for the new development at Nordhavn.”

Dan Stubbergaard continues: “By revitalizing our industrial heritage, we discover new potential and highlight historical traces in our cities. They represent a built resource. They represent our history. By doing so, we can transform what many people today perceive as industrial trash into treasure.”

The Silo was completed in May 2017, when its first residents moved in. The remaining residents will move in during the next couple of months, and the restaurant on the top floor is due to open later this year. CPH City & Port Development is currently showing an exhibition on the ground floor of the building on the future development plans for Nordhavn, also created by COBE.
