Nord Mills Lantmännen grain silo is located on Styrmansgatan and Bassängkajen in Malmö, Sweden.

The grain silo has Nord Mills on the roof, which is the brand for the flour that Lantmännen Cerealia AB sells to bakeries. When the same flour is sold to you and me, private customers, it is usually Kungsörnen on the packaging.

The plant began to be built in the 1880s and many parts have been demolished and rebuilt.

There are no known plans today for the plant to be closed or demolished / rebuilt, but there are two types of forces that indicate that the mill is gone in a few Years. The city is getting closer every year and port areas are now very attractive to city planners and other stakeholders. It is clear that the railroad tracks will soon be removed and that maritime transport to the factory will also cease shortly when the flap bridge is replaced by a fixed bridge.

The second force is the development in the flour market and the ongoing rationalization in the industry and within the Cerealia group. In recent years, milling operations have delivered a profit of approximately SEK 100 million.

About 190,000 tonnes of flour are produced per year. The production is in operation around the clock all year round and is handled by approximately 40 people. About 80% of the flour is delivered in bulk to large customers. No less than 140 different products are offered and these are manufactured according to two main principles. Either different cereals are mixed into a raw material that is then milled, or you either grind the cereals individually and then mix to a final product.

Grinding grain has a long history, but today’s rollers have different speeds to more easily distinguish the bran (peel) from the core.

A silo plant contains inlet, weighing, sampling, cleaning, drying and silos for storage. Grain is optimally stored at a moisture content of no more than 14% and before grinding the grain must be dried. One of the reasons why silos were built in the past was to influence the price. Without storage, all grain had come to the market at about the same time, with low prices as a result. The factory has a total storage capacity of approximately 53,000 tonnes.

Cerealia was formed in 1984 when Lantmännen merged the mill and consumer products into one company. The mill was placed in the newly formed subsidiary Nord Mills AB, a merger of the Kungs eagle’s mills, Mårten Pehrssons Valsqvarn and Helsingborg Kvarn AB. The ore mill was named Nord Mills until around 2008 when it was named Lantmännen Cerealia – Malmö mill.

Today’s intake for trucks was previously an open street, but it is now incorporated into the facility. More history can be found in the report on Malmö Stora Valskvarn.

Between 2009-12, the volume of bag-packed bread decreased by just over 13% and this trend continued during 2013 (source: Skåne-Möllan AB Annual Report 2013). Reducing bread intake is one of the health trends that also affects the flour market. Large industrial bakeries such as Pågen – which has its own mill – have also received increased competition in the stores’ increasing bake-off production.

Rosenholms allé is a street in the Fridhem suburbs from Malmö in South of Sweden.

Fridhem is a neighbourhood of Malmö, situated in the Borough of Västra Innerstaden, Malmö Municipality, Skåne County, Sweden.

The name comes from an Old Norse compound fríðheim (fríðr + heimr), “home of the beautiful”. It is thought to have been named this since the Norse queen Auðhildr, known for her extreme beauty, was born here.

Gamla Hovrätten or the Old High Court is a building, formerly the seat of the High Court, located on Malmöhusvägen just north of Kungsparken in Malmö. The building was built in 1917 and the architect was Ivar Callmander. Since 1994, the Old High Court has been a building memory.

2019 – High Court entrance on Malmöhusvägen in Malmö

The reason for the building being erected was for the court to be moved from Kristianstad to Malmö. In the national romantic spirit, Callmander took inspiration from the Swedish great power era and its tight and heavy building art. The symmetry of the facade, the rustic corner chains and the pompous gate is an expression of this. However, the building was criticized for not linking to local traditions. In 1956, the roof was decorated and the skylights were added. There was also an extension on the back of the house, which faces the canal, and on the other side of the canal has been since 2009 New Court, with more modern architecture. Since 2013, the old courthouse building has been privately owned and the house has been running an office – conference business, the High Court.

Krankajen is a street in the harbor area of Malmö.
This part is also known as Västra Hamnen and more specific Dockan.

Malmö is the largest city of the Swedish county of Skåne County, the third-largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm and Gothenburg, and the sixth-largest city in Scandinavia, with a population of 316,588 inhabitants out of a municipal total of 338,230 in 2018. The Malmö Metropolitan Region is home to over 700,000 people, and the Øresund Region, which includes Malmö, is home to 4 million people.

Malmö was one of the earliest and most industrialized towns of Scandinavia, but it struggled with the adaptation to post-industrialism. Since the construction of the Öresund Bridge, Malmö has undergone a major transformation with architectural developments, and it has attracted new biotech and IT companies, and particularly students through Malmö University and other higher education facilities. The city contains many historic buildings and parks, and is also a commercial center for the western part of Scania.

Kungsparken is a park in Malmö, Sweden. It is located in the centre of the city just west of the Malmö City Hall and Malmö District Court and surrounds Malmöhus Castle.

Up until 1881 it was known as Slottsparken. Because of this and their close proximity, it is sometimes confused with the nearby Slottsparken on maps, which was established in 1897.

2019 – Utsiktsplatsen in Kungsparken in Malmö, Sweden

The 8.4-acre Kungsparken was opened in 1872 by King Oscar II. Its official name was still Kung Oscars Park, but it became quickly popularly known as Kungsparken.
Kungsparken is the oldest park in Malmö and was created on a former area which belongs to the fortress of Malmöhus. In the park there are some ponds and a large inventory of about 130 partially very old tree species from three continents.

The heart of the park is a gorgeous cast-iron fountain, which was built in 1882. North of the fountain you find an old cave, which once was the main attraction in the park.

2019 – Utsiktsplatsen in Kungsparken in Malmö, Sweden

The building located in the southern part of the park is the former Park restaurant, which was opened in 1881 by King Oscar II. After extensive restoration work in 2001 the Casino Cosmopol resides in the old building.

Once the fortress had lost its military importance in the mid 19th century, there was the idea to plant a park between the fort and the old part of the city.

The Danish landscape architect Ove Høegh Hansen designed the park according to the former ideal of bourgeois society, following the example of an English garden with lawns, ponds, large shrubs and exotic trees.

The restaurant and reception building used to be the first place where visitors went when the entered the island for their vacation. Here they would hear in which stuga (little holiday house) they would stay. A stay would be between one and three weeks.
The restaurant building was also the place where almost every body used to come for dinner or had to pick up food in a box. Most houses didn’t have kitchen facilities, so there was some kind of planning at what time holiday guests would be welcome for the evening meal. People also picked up the evening dinner in a box to eat it in their own stuga or summer house. The dinner room has huge panoramic windows on the seaside, which made it a popular place to eat.
From the early seventies, electricity was on the island and life became a bit more luxurious, people were able to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at the restaurant building

Volvo Photo Locations has found many original material from the various Volvo publications that were made on the Trälen island. If you look at the island, there are several places that were popular for photography:

  1. the jetty (brygga) near the beach
  2. the beach with its famous concrete wall
  3. the restaurant building which was also the reception house
  4. the grass surfaced playground
  5. some small holiday houses
  6. the concrete stairway to on the hill

AB Volvo bought the island in the late 40’s and owned it until the 90’s. After Volvo had abandoned the island a period of decay started. Since a few years, after many years of inactivity, the island is alive again, with a new name, Lilla Fjellsholmen and is inhabited year round. New houses have been built. But many places and buildings are still remembering us to the places when it was a summer camp to many Volvo employees and their families.

2018 – Lilla Fjellsholmen Information Sign, as seen in summer 2018

During the summer of 2018, an article in the swedish Klassiker magazine and the cover on Volvo Klassiker magazine were the trigger to visit the island Trälen. By coincidence, I was just spending my summer vacation in the same area!

Cover of the Volvo Klassiker magazine

Even today, the old mailbox for Volvo at Trälen is still hanging there… :-)

In 1948, AB Volvo purchased the island Trälen to offer their employees a place to have vacation. In those days, it was popular for large companies in Sweden to offer employees a place to stay during the vacation. Vacation was new after the second world war and for many workers they did not have any alternative or place to stay, once they had time off during the summer. Staying at their small houses in the city with their children was not easy.

1948 – Newspaper HT article on the purchase of Trälen by AB Volvo

——-
Volvo’s summer camp was a holiday island during a 40-year period, the idea was to offer a summer paradise for Volvo employees with their families. When the island became less popular, since cheap charter trips to the sunny south of Europe became popular, the island with the small houses were abandoned. Over time they were vandalized and the decay became a fact.

In the 1990s, a local developer bought the island and went through a detailed plan for new buildings.

Finally in 2012, the island was bought by Bansvik Holding AB, which has now started to build 63 year-round houses with sea view terraces and small guest houses. On the island there are also plans to built a large house with eleven apartments.

How did this all happened and what is the history of Trälen?

In the 1940s, the island, which at that time was called Trälen, was bought by Volvo to be used as holiday accommodation for the employees. When the record year stood for the door, cottages, common room and restaurant were built on the island. For a few decades, this was a summer idyll for the Volvo employees and their families. Now it’s time to renew Lilla Fjellsholmen and fill the island with life again.

1970 – Article from the Volvo Kontakt magazine for employees regarding the time to book for your two weeks at Trälen.

1970 – Map over Trälen from the Volvo Kontakt magazine from April 1970.

In 2014, Kungälv’s Environmental and Building Committee has granted building permits for the display houses that will be ready for the summer 2015. The plan for Trälen includes a small society with 63 single-family homes, at least ten apartments, a common building, docks and sea sheds, and a kiosk.

“It’s a great opportunity to exploit an entire island, there is something unique on the west coast. We have put a lot of time and effort into creating something very nice with modern architecture adapted to the environment” says Göran Moser, who would rather name the island Lilla Fjellsholmen than Trälen as it was previously named.

2014 – Sketches from Cream Architects from Chalmers University

He is one of six private individuals with a background in the construction industry who bought the island from the former owner. The detailed plan they inherited. It allows about 70 houses of 75 square meters in building area, with a living space of between 100 and 130 square. In addition, there is a complement building of 25 square meters.

Building permits are now being sought for holiday homes, but the buildings have the same standard as the year-round housing and fit both couples and a small family with children, Moser emphasizes.

Three architectural students at Chalmers got to know the plans for Trälen and the project was their thesis project this spring.

“It is a bit unique because it is about placing the buildings carefully in nature, without blowing up which one usually does when building small houses” says Gustav Johansson and says that the houses should instead be on poles.

“The whole was important to us. We have looked at everything from roads to the social and the location of the houses. It is such a good location so we wanted many of the houses to take part of it, that a house would not ruin for another” says Filip Karlén.

The students also wanted to get away from the established picture of how a coastal society should look.
After graduating, they have started the company Cream Architects together and worked on to realize the project together with Lilla Fjellsholmen AB.

The detailed plan for the island also allows ten smaller apartments. These will be designed by the architect Gert Wingårdh who has a personal connection to the site.

“We are now waiting for advance notice from the municipality. The way the house will look is not quite clear” says Göran Moser.

In autumn 2014, clearing works was underway on the island and during the spring 2015 the three show houses will be built. At the turn of the year 2015–2016, he hopes that the municipal sewage system will be in Åkerhög a few kilometers away from Trälen. In that case, the first inhabitants can move in during the spring of 2016.

This is Lilla Fjellsholmen

A mile south of Marstrand lies the island which, from the 1950s to the 80s, was a holiday village for Volvo workers. It was then called Trälen.
It then comprised 60 simple summer homes, community facilities and a restaurant.
The cottages have been hit by severe vandalism through the decades, but in 2006 there was still a TV show on the island. TV4 recorded the documentary Trälen på ön (Slaves on the island). People from different backgrounds would live together for 40 days. However, the series became an audience fiasco and got no continuation…
In the 90s, the island was sold by Volvo and bought by a local developer got through a detailed plan that allows new buildings on the island with minimal impact on nature.
At year-end 2011, Trälen was sold to the property development company Byggvesta from Nacka, near Stockholm.
The video for Håkan Hellström’s single ”Det kommer aldrig va över för mig” is partly recorded on the Trälen.
A few years ago, the island was sold to the current owners, six private individuals, several of whom are partners in the construction company Byggvesta.

—-

Trälen, which lies about 10 kilometers south of Marstrand, was purchased in 2012 by real estate company Bansvik Holding AB, owned by Lars Jonsson. In the same vein, work began to recapture the island’s real name – Lilla Fjellsholmen.
“We tore the old holiday cottages last year. They were completely overdue and vandalized after standing empty for many years. Then we began to work with our idea of how we wanted to develop the island and announced an architectural competition” he says.

Several architects submitted proposals and the company fell for one from three architectural students. Their degree project has now taking shape on the former holiday island.

“They have started a company and are strongly involved in the construction project together with an architect professor” says Lars Jonsson.

“The idea is that the houses should be built in natural places with minimal impact on nature. There will be built 63 independent houses with associated guest house, seabed and boat site and house prices vary between SEK 5.4 and 8.9 million. Later, a house with apartments will also be built, designed by Wingårdh Arkitekter”.

“The houses are built as year-round homes, and we hope that as many as possible will be” says Lars Jonsson.

The island lies quite remote from all other facilities, the nearest grocery store is located in Kärna and there is a bus line. By car it takes 40 minutes to get to Göteborg. But the road is by bit narrow and crooked.

“We have no opportunities to influence the Swedish Transport Administration here, but our hope is that there soon will be a walking and cycling path next to the road. After all, it is not only we who build here so there will be more housing and more traffic” says Lars Jonsson.

He hopes that the walking and cycling track can be built in connection with digging for municipal water and sewage to the island.

“The houses must be on the ground floor and on some sites we need to fill out” Lars Jonsson continues.

The bridge leading out to the island was once paid for by Volvo. It should be retained but supplemented with walking and cycling paths. There are also walking paths on the island that need to be cleared.

Lars Jonsson, who is raised in Lysekil, is very happy that the building was started in early 2015.

2015 – Lars Jonsson (GP.se)

“I have been living in the United States for 30 years, but I am still a Bohuslän in my heart and staying here for a month a year” he says.

The former owner got through a detailed process through the detailed plan, which meant that the beach protection was revoked. That is why Lars Jonsson and his company can now build houses on the shore close to the sea!

A week in Cefalù on Sicily, Italy

January 27th, 2019

Summer 2018, after our visit to Palermo we rented a car and drove to our second destination for this short vacation on Sicily, Cefalù.

Places we visited in Cefalù:

Duomo di Cefalu
The Cathedral of Cefalù or Duomo di Cefalù is a Roman Catholic basilica.
wikipedia.org

The cathedral was erected in 1131 in the Norman architectural style, the island of Sicily having been conquered by the Normans in 1091. According to tradition, the building was erected after a vow made to the Holy Saviour by the King of Sicily, Roger II, after he escaped from a storm to land on the city’s beach. The building has a fortress-like character and, seen from a distance, it dominates the skyline of the surrounding medieval town. It made a powerful statement of the Norman presence.

The cathedral has a cloister that can be entered from within the church. The arcade has pointed arches, each of which rests on slender, paired columns. The form is not different from that of Spanish and some French cloisters; the composite capitals of the coupled columns are Norman and other more generically Romanesque in their motifs. This cloister is the model for the successive Norman cloisters of Sicily, in particular that of the Monreale.

Castel di Tusa

Named after the castle that now lies in ruins 600m above it, this small coastal resort about 25km east of Cefalù is best known for the controversial Fiumara d’Arte, an open-air sculpture park featuring a collection of contemporary artworks scattered along the fiumara (riverbed) of the Tusa River. The most recent, and most impressive, installation is the Piramide 38° Parallelo, a gleaming rust-coloured steel pyramid high on a hilltop above the sea, now a regular gathering point for solstice celebrations.

Art Hotel Atelier sul Mare is a hotel-museum of contemporary art unique in the world, just few meters from a wonderful sea, in Castel di Tusa (ME), nearby Cefalù.
The hotel is situated in a territory full of culture and popular traditions. Inserted in a rare beauty sight, in a wonderful frame of an integral and magnetic nature, between a crystalline sea and the Nebrodi mounts, Atelier sul Mare is an ideal hotel for who wants to spend unforgettable vacations. A place of art, romantic and relaxant, for who wishes to regenerate spirituality in a magical and exclusive atmosphere.

Monumento per un Poeta Morto (1989)

The sculpture is also known as the “Window on the sea”, for its strong visual impact. Realized by Tano Festa and dedicated to the brother poet, the “Monument” is a hymn to the color and infancy, recurrent topics in the works of the artist. – the frame, high 18 meters, realized in cement (reinforced concrete) and ferrous armor, is the triumph of the blue color, that is not the one we usually see on the painter’s palette, but the blue of the soul, when a poet and sculptor like Tano Festa, that was adult and child at the same time, decides to show himself on the infinite. This enormous window that frames the sea, expresses the limited sense of the possibility to be stopped with the thought on the horizon. But, also, it’s a tension to the serenity, searched from the artist, broken from the black monolith, ended sense of our existence, that runs through the joyful window adorned with the typical little clouds recurrent in the artist artworks, interfering with the harmony of the sculpture.

Nicosia
Unfortunately during our visit to this place, it was raining like from hell. We were totally unprepared and could not leave the car. We managed just to reach a basic restaurant for lunch.

Nicosia is a village and comune of the province of Enna in Sicily, southern Italy. Nicosia, along with Troina are the northernmost towns in the province of Enna. The vicinity traditionally contained are salt mines and arable lands.

Castelbuono

Castelbuono is a town and comune in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily.
It is known for its castle from which its name derives, and around which the city developed in the 14th century.

From Cefalu it takes about 25 minutes by car or 40 minutes by bus to get to Castelbuono.

Castelbuono Ventimiglia Castle
www.museocivico.eu

The construction of the Castle mixes Arab-Norman features with others typical of the castles built during the Hohenstaufen rule of southern Italy: the cube shape recalls Arabic architecture; the square towers, although incorporated into those of the façade, reflect Norman architectural style, as also the battlements; and the round tower recalls aspects of Frederick II’s times architecture.

The structure is on three floors, the first floor for the servants, with the essential services, the second for the nobility, with the sumptuous Cappella Palatina, and the third for the court and for guests.

The Cappella Palatina (“Palace Chapel”) was built in 1683 by the brothers Giuseppe and Giacomo Serpotta, with a great profusion of precious marble, stuccowork, putti, and friezes that commemorate the most resplendent moments in the history of the House of Ventimiglia. Here is kept the holy relic of the skull of Saint Anne, in an urn that acts as the pedestal to the sculpted bust of Castelbuono’s patron saint.

There are also the traditional underground dungeons and a tunnel that leads to the Church of San Francesco.

Looking for an expert of food and wine, and most of all, an expert of tradition, who took upon himself the responsibility of preserving that knowledge that changed the humanity and the world? Peppe Carollo of the restaurant Nangalarruni in Castelbuono, to quote Ermanno Olmi, is just that, but also a fine connoisseur of wines and a passionate mushroom collector.

In the heart of the characteristic historical centre of Castelbuono, along the main street of the city that once belonged to the Ventimiglia family, nested in a little alley is Peppe Carollo’s restaurant. At “Nangalarruni” (the name comes from the famous woodwind instrument featured in many Sicilian folk songs) you can try the inland Sicilian cuisine – apart from meats and the cheeses, the dishes are mostly made of seasonal vegetables and mushrooms.

A cuisine associated with seasonal products and dishes with an antique flavour, some of which have been revisited in a modern key with a touch of creativity, like the fillet in a manna crust with almonds and pistachios, and many other products with unique and authentic flavours. Among the antipasti, you will find the Caponata della nonna with aubergines, the tortino di panecotto (a savoury pie), a selection of typical meats and cheeses of the Madonie mountains, black pig lonzino smoked with tobacco, roast beef marinated with citrus fruits, mushroom and ricotta gratin, greens with smoked Cacciocavallo, mushroom and potato pie, cream of ricotta and truffle. As your first course (primi), you can try dishes like mushroom soup, organic legumes and greens, cheese, pepper and wild mushroom spaghetti, fusilli with pork mince, garden vegetables and basil ricotta, pasta with tenerumi greens, potatoes, zucchini and salted ricotta, and a fondue with smoked caciotta and truffle. The second course (secondi) could be served at a royal dinner! Choose from a pork fillet in a crust of manna or baked in foil with a sauce of mushrooms and vegetables, served with a side of rosemary roasted potatoes, tagliata steak with smoked salt, the hamburger (beef, chicory, pecorino San Nicola, crispy onion and a cheese sauce), roasted pork in citrus sauce, pork fillet stuffed with Ragusano cheese, swiss chard, cheese fondue with black bee honey, rabbit stewed with Madonie spices and truffle. A sumptuous lunch that can only be concluded with a delicious dessert: the typical Castelbuono Testa di Turco or the cassata with ricotta ice cream.

This destination is a must not only for gourmets but also for wine enthusiasts, with a wine cellar that counts an assortment of over 600 labels. In summer, you can also eat outdoors. There is also an option of a tasting menu.

Manifesta 12 Collateral Events

The exhibition represents the collaboration between Kunst Meran Merano Arte and Civic Museum of Castelbuono, investigating the social and artistic conditions in Sicily and South Tyrol, two extreme poles of Italy, through a group of artists, three from each region.

Santuario di Gibilmanna
Contrada Valle Grande, Frazione di Gibilmanna
www.cefaluguide.it

The Sanctuary of Gibilmanna is a Christian shrine in the province of Palermo, Sicily, southern Italy. It is located in Gibilmanna, a frazione of the comune of Cefalù on a slope of the Pizzo Sant’Angelo, a peak in the Madonie chain, at an altitude of some 800 m.

According to tradition, Gibilmanna would be one of the six Benedictine monasteries commissioned by Gregory the Great (pope from 590) at his own expenses before his election. On the site existed a church dedicated to St Michael Archangel.

The convent’s edifices were perhaps in ruins in the 9th century, when the Arabs conquered the area (858), while the small church would house several hermitages. After the Norman conquest of Sicily, a program of numerous Christian constructions was launched, perhaps including that of Gibilmanna. The church, again mentioned in 1178, was a priorate in 1228, and thus no more a Benedictine possession.

In 1535, father Sebastiano Majo da Gratteri, one of the first follower of the Capuchine reformation, established himself at Gibilmann. Next to the old Benedictine chapel a first convent was built. In the early 17th century it was decided to build a new church in place of the Benedictine chapel: finished in 1623, it was opened in 1625, including a sacristy and an entrance staircase. The façade was preceded by a portico. The new church also received, from the old church, an image of Madonna with Child, a Byzantine-style fresco, a statue of the Virgin and a Crucifix (also in Byzantine-style). For the high altar a new painting was commissioned, depicting the Assumption. The old chapel was demolished. In the same centuries, the convent was further enlarged and enriched. Artworks added include statues of St. ohn the Baptist and St. Helena next to the altar of the Madonna Chapel.

After the portico preceding the church crumbled down, the façade was remade in Neo-Gothic style in 1907.

Places to stay:

AirBnB @ Lorenzo’s Contrada Kalura.

We stayed just outside Cefalù in an apartment at an Villa with swimming pool overlooking the sea.

This place is really a great gen just outside Cefalù. We felt very welcome by Lorenzo and his wife and they helped out with every question that we had. The appartment is situated next to the host in a smaller recidency with access through a gate. The pool area is shared with only two other guests. Parking is just outside the appartment. The garden is beautifully kept and the outdoor spaces well equipped with furniture. The appartment is spacious, well equipped and very tidy. There are three air conditioners if the temperatures would rise but the shutters keep the sun out and do a lot of work keeping the appartment cool. You can easily reach Cefalù by car but parking is sparse. In the evenings we sometimes took the 25 min walk to the old town. That was an easy walk once you know the route. We highly recommed this place and would love to come back. Thank you for your hospitality!

Lorenzo with his wife and little dog

Contrada Kalura, despite being very close to the city of Cefalù, offers absolute tranquility and spectacular views from sunrise to sunset. In the evening, by turning off the lights on the terrace, you can admire the starry sky. The climate, moreover, is influenced by the sea breeze that breaks the heat even on the hottest days.

Car rental:

For our week outside Palermo we had rented a car in Palermo. It was not so easy to find a company that was open on sunday in the city. After our week, we could leave the car at the airport in Palermo.

Edvard Thomsens Vej is located in Ørestad South in Copenhagen.

The parking house in Ørestad, Copenhagen, won first prize in a competition in 2008. It’s located at the busy corner of Edvard Thomsensvej, where its facades enclose very different types of urban spaces and courtyards.

The architectural idea is that the building, with its light facades of a diffuse character, is well suited to the varied context it’s situated in with different kinds of developments and urban spaces surrounding it. A main idea is that the building in its entirety should not by itself signal ‘car park’, but that the signage on street level alone communicates the identity of the building to motorists.

The facades are designed in white translucent materials with “greening” towards the courtyard and residential block to convey the desired expression, and to help bring the large building in scale with the people living in the neighbourhood or just passing by.

P-Hus Robert Jacobsensvej is located on Robert Jacobsens Vej in Ørestad South in Copenhagen.

Another step in the development of Ørestad Syd is taken. Now residents, employees and guests in the area receive their own state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly p-house with space for 690 cars.

One of the primary purposes of building parking facilities in Ørestad is that the cars must not fill the streets, so the city’s space can be used for anything other than rows of parking spaces. Ørestad Syd’s first p-house is constructed from high climate standards with an intelligent system that leads the driver to the nearest available parking space. It is located on Robert Jacobsens Vej 71, not far from Vestamager Metro Station and just between the Stævnen and the new Robert Jacobsen College.

2018 – P-Hus Robert Jacobsensvej in Copenhagen

The perforated facade of the house shows a motive of cars at a distance, but in addition to signaling the function of the house, the perforation also creates a natural vent, which means that the electrical ventilation must only be used for a few days a year. And despite the holes of the facade, it effectively protects the parked cars from wind and weather and keeps snow and rain out. The entire p-house is illuminated by LED light, which, besides being CO2-reducing, is especially safe because it reminds of daylight and does not leave any dark hooks.

Ørestad is a developing city area in Copenhagen, Denmark, on the island of Amager. When the area was planned it was expected that 20,000 people would live in Ørestad, 20,000 would study, and 80,000 people would be employed in the area. However, so far the area has failed to attract even half of those numbers. The area is being developed using the new town concept with the Copenhagen Metro as the primary public transport grid, connecting the area with the rest of Metropolitan Copenhagen.

Ørestad is noted for its attractive location and excellent infrastructure, which apart from the metro includes the Oresund Railway and Copenhagen Airport, as well as the nearby Øresund Bridge. The regional Oresundtrains reach Copenhagen Airport in six minutes, Copenhagen Central Station in seven, and 29 minutes to Central Station in Malmö, Sweden’s third largest city. Ørestad has once been referred to as “the largest crossroad in Scandinavia”. However, Ørestad has also been criticized heavily for its modernist planning approach, focusing exclusively on real estate development and infrastructure connections. This has resulted in wide, open spaces that are void of any human life. The plans for the area have been remade several times to account for such mistakes, but so far without much success.

808 S Olive Street Parking is located on S Olive St and W 8th St in Los Angeles, USA.

Olive street is located in South Park, a commercial district in southwestern Downtown Los Angeles, California. It is the location of the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Staples Center, and the “L.A. Live” entertainment complex.

“The District includes all property within a boundary that begins on the north at 9th Street and the 110 Freeway and runs east to Flower Street then south to Olympic Boulevard, east on Olympic Boulevard to mid-block across Hill Street then south to 11th Street then east to mid-block across Broadway forming the northern boundary. From there the eastern boundary runs south across 12th Street, past Pico Boulevard, past 14th Street, past 15th Street, across Venice Boulevard to the centerline of 17th Street. From there the southern boundary runs west along 17th Street/Santa Monica Freeway across Broadway, past Hill Street, past Olive Street, past Grand Avenue, past Hope Street, past Flower Street, across Figueroa Street to behind the Convention Center along Convention Center Drive. From there the western boundary runs north along L.A. Live Way (Cherry Street) across Pico Boulevard, past 12th Street, past Chick Hearn Court (11th Street) across Olympic Boulevard to 9th Street and the Harbor (110) Freeway.”

Bordering the district are Pico-Union on the west, West Adams on the southwest, South Los Angeles district on the southeast, the Warehouse District on the southeast, and the Financial District on the northeast. Major thoroughfares include Venice, Pico and Olympic Boulevards, Grand Avenue, and Figueroa Street. The Blue Line light rail line and Expo Line light rail line stop in the district at the Pico/Chick Hearn station.

At the beginning of 21st century the area began to rapidly transform with infill development. Luxury apartments and condominiums with ground floor retail began construction in the 2000s. The district’s proximity to the University of Southern California, as well as the Blue Line light rail line, have made it an attractive area for young professionals. As with many neighborhood transformations, this change in demographics has a few concerned about displacement and gentrification issues.
